Losing a tooth can feel like a big deal, because it is. Maybe you’ve hidden your smile in photos. Maybe you’ve struggled to chew on one side. Or maybe you’ve worried about what happens next. But modern dentistry gives you solid choices to fill that gap. Two of the most common options are dental implants and bridges. Both could work and give you back a complete, functional smile. But they work very differently.
At Gettysburg Smiles, Dr. Rita Tempel takes the time to explain your options so you can make a decision that fits your health, your budget, and your goals. Let’s break down how implants and bridges compare.

What Is a Dental Bridge?
A bridge does exactly what it sounds like. It “bridges” the gap where a tooth is missing. The false tooth (called a pontic) sits in the middle, anchored by crowns placed on the teeth on either side. Those neighboring teeth get shaved down to hold the bridge in place.
The upside? Bridges are usually faster. The whole process might take just two or three visits. They also tend to cost less upfront than implants.
The trade-off? You have to alter two perfectly healthy teeth to support the bridge. Those crowned teeth also become harder to clean, which raises their risk of decay down the road. Most bridges last 5 to 15 years before needing replacement.
What Is a Dental Implant?
An implant replaces the entire tooth, from root to crown. A small titanium post goes into your jawbone. Over several months, that post fuses with the bone (a process called osseointegration). Once healed, Dr. Tempel places a custom crown on top.
The upside is hard to beat. Implants look, feel, and function like natural teeth. You floss and brush them normally. They don’t affect neighboring teeth. And with good care, an implant can last 30 years or more, often a lifetime.
The trade-off? Implants take longer, usually four to nine months from start to finish. They also cost more upfront, though their longevity can make them cheaper over time. You also need enough healthy jawbone to support the implant.
So Which One Should You Choose?
That depends on your situation.
A bridge might be right if:
- You need a faster, more budget-friendly solution
- The teeth next to the gap already need crowns
- You’re not interested in surgery
An implant might be right if:
- You want the longest-lasting solution
- You prefer not to alter healthy neighboring teeth
- You have good bone density and healthy gums
- You’re willing to invest more time upfront for decades of worry-free function
What About Partial Dentures?
Some patients ask about removable partial dentures as a third option. They’re the most affordable choice, but they’re also the least comfortable and stable. Most people prefer the security of a fixed bridge or implant.
