What to Expect at Your Dentist Appointments
Your first dentist appointment with Dr. Tempel in our Littlestown, PA, area dental office will take longer than a typical visit. Be prepared to fill out paperwork and share your dental insurance information.
A patient’s first appointment will include dental X-rays, a complete oral exam, and teeth cleaning. Dr. Tempel will also screen for oral diseases such as gum disease, tooth decay, and oral cancer. During a typical visit, we’ll also examine your bite.
One of our registered dental hygienists will meticulously clean your teeth. They’ll gently remove plaque and built-up tartar from your teeth, paying close attention to the gum line. Then, our hygienist will polish your teeth and floss in between them, leaving you with a clean and healthy smile.
If we find dental problems or the beginnings of an oral health concern, Dr. Tempel will work with you to create a custom treatment plan. She may request more digital imaging
Providing Solutions for Periodontal Disease
Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is a serious problem for your dental health. Even though it can be prevented, millions of people still have it. Gum disease is the main reason adults lose teeth, so we take steps to stop it before it starts.
During each regular checkup, we’ll examine your gums to see if you show signs of gingivitis, the first stage of periodontal disease. If treated in the early stages, we can eliminate the disease. However, if we don’t address gingivitis, it can advance, and you risk bone and tooth loss. Common signs you’re developing gingivitis include bleeding, sore, red, or tender gums.
Scaling and root planing is a standard gum disease treatment that can eliminate gingivitis and prevent severe damage to your teeth and gums. When we scale the gums, we use sterilized tools to remove plaque and tartar from and beneath the gums. After scaling, we perform root planing treatment. During root planing, we we remove plaque and smooth the tooth roots to help them reattach to the gum tissue. We recommend that you maintain a strict oral hygiene routine and visit Dr. Tempel twice a year to prevent gum disease.
Treatment for Sleep Apnea
Did you know you can get sleep apnea treatment at the dentist? In addition to offering complete general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry services, Dr. Tempel also treats sleep apnea. This sleep disorder shouldn’t be ignored because it can lead to severe problems with your overall health.
Dr. Tempel treats obstructive sleep apnea with oral sleep appliances. Patients can now wear a custom oral appliance to bed to maintain open airways instead of a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure therapy) machine.
You may have sleep apnea if you or your partner snore loudly at night, gasp for air while sleeping, or remain sleepy despite a whole night’s rest. Dr. Tempel will work with your physician to get a diagnosis and help manage your sleep apnea with an oral sleep appliance. We’ll recommend an appliance if you have mild symptoms and don’t tolerate a CPAP well.
